Seasonal vegetables are those that are at their optimum moment of consumption and, therefore, provide us with more benefits and have a much more intense and natural flavour.

Its smell, taste and texture are excellent at that moment.

The Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) creates a calendar of seasonal fruits and vegetables in Spain each year. At Tapería Orgánica, we wanted to summarise this calendar in this article and answer some of the most frequent questions.

The vegetables that reach their optimum moment in spring are the artichokes, Swiss chard, spinach and leeks. It is also the season for lettuce, radishes, onions and carrots. Fruits with great availability in spring are strawberries, plums, apricots, cherries and blueberries.

The season of heat and sun is the time of great variety of refreshing fruits such as pears, melon, watermelon, raspberry and blackberry. In summer, aubergine, peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, squash, courgettes and beetroot are harvested.

Autumn is the food season such as figs, golden delicious apples, blanquilla pears, quince, pomegranate, grapes and persimmon. In September, the first crops of vegetables such as cauliflower, spinach, turnips, artichokes, wild asparagus and fennel also arrive.

At the end of autumn come the endives and the lettuces and in December the season of more winter vegetables like cabbage, celery and broccoli begin. Citrus fruits such as orange, tangerine, grapefruit and lemon are the best allies at this time to keep your defences always alert and achieve radiant skin.

There are also fruits and vegetables that, depending on their reproductive cycle or the place where they are grown, can be found perfect all year round such as lemon, banana, avocado, mango, pineapple and kiwi.
